Although this 250-year-old coaching inn is 10 miles from the sea, it does have a distinctly nautical theme. The cocktail bar from the Titanic’s sister ship, The Olympic, is propped up by the regulars in the Lambton’s lounge. The bar somehow found its way to Pity Me after the demise of Sunderland’s Vaux Breweries. It had, apparently, been part of the fixtures and fittings at the brewery before it went out of business 12 years ago. Vaux had originally repossessed the bar after a publican failed to pay his debts. The Olympic was dismantled at Tyneside’s Palmers shipyard in Jarrow in 1935 before final scrapping two years later at Inverkeithing in Scotland. While it was fascinating to marvel at the history of the bar, and reflect on both the Titanic and the Olympic, it was also of interest to see the real ales now on display..
